{"id":1898,"date":"2019-01-11T13:21:07","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T17:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.carilec.org\/?p=1898"},"modified":"2019-01-11T13:21:07","modified_gmt":"2019-01-11T17:21:07","slug":"worlds-largest-windfarm-opens-off-cumbria-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/worlds-largest-windfarm-opens-off-cumbria-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s largest windfarm opens off Cumbria coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world\u2019s largest offshore windfarm, capable of supplying enough green energy to power around 600,000 homes, has opened off the coast of England.<\/p>\n<p>The Walney Extension, a Danish-led and funded project in the Irish Sea off Cumbria, consists of 87 turbines covering an area of 145 square kilometres \u2013 roughly equivalent to 20,000 football pitches.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 12 miles off the coast of Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness, the windfarm is capable of generating 695 megawatts and has been connected to the National Grid by 300km of cables.<\/p>\n<p>It becomes the largest windfarm currently operational in the world, overtaking London Array located around seven miles off Kent in the Thames Estuary.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the project started in 2015, and has been completed by Danish energy firm Orsted, with the backing of two Danish pension funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK is the global leader in offshore wind and Walney Extension showcases the industry&#8217;s incredible success story,\u201d said Matthew Wright, Orsted UK managing director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project, completed on time and within budget, also marks another important step towards Orsted&#8217;s vision of a world that runs entirely on green energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe northwest region plays an important role in our UK offshore wind operations and our aim is to make a lasting and positive impact here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to ensure that the local community becomes an integral part of the renewable energy revolution that&#8217;s happening along its coastline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britain is considered to be the best location to generate wind power in Europe and the UK is the sixth highest producer of the renewable energy source in the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, wind met a total of 15 per cent of the UK\u2019s entire electricity demand, the highest total in history.<\/p>\n<p>The first quarter of this year also marked the first time in British history wind power outstripped electricity production by nuclear power stations.<\/p>\n<p>Renewable energy of all forms now makes up almost a third of the electricity generated in the UK each year.<\/p>\n<p>Energy minister, Claire Perry, said: \u201cRecord-breaking engineering landmarks like this huge offshore wind farm help us consolidate our global leadership position, break records for generating renewable energy, and create thousands of high quality jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Source <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world\u2019s largest offshore windfarm, capable of supplying enough green energy to power around 600,000 homes, has opened off the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1551,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,76],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1898","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-other-news"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"featured_image":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/OtherNews.png","month_date":"Jan","day_date":"11","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1898","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1898"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1898\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/media\/1551"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1898"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1898"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/api\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1898"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
