The input of these communities is invaluable in building a sustainable future, and the event brings together experts from islands around the world to discuss key issues facing the planet and how we can resolve them together.<\/p>\n
There are over 30 different sessions available with no limit on how many participants can join. Attendees will be able to engage with one another throughout the week, and will have additional opportunities to interact with the Summit\u2019s speakers and partners with features such as a tradeshow and focused networking sessions. Facilitating conversations has been key throughout planning the event format, and the host\u00a0Island Innovation\u00a0utilises its\u00a0expertise\u00a0in digital communications to ensure there will be plenty of opportunities for exchange just like a physical event.<\/p>\n
There are over 150 speakers joining\u00a0this year’s Virtual Island Summit\u00a0including the Prime Minister of Fiji, Prime Minister of St Vincent & the Grenadines, President of Guyana, Scotland’s Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, Governor of Guam, Malta’s Foreign Minister and the Mayor of Rapa Nui (Easter Island).\u00a0 Regions represented include the Caribbean, Pacific, Arctic, Indian Ocean, Patagonia, Mediterranean, North and South Atlantic, Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started the Virtual Island Summit to encourage connections between seemingly far-flung islands that have a substantial amount in common but may be separated by vast distances. The idea was born before we were forced to use\u00a0digital events this year by the pandemic, and the opportunity\u00a0will extend far beyond lockdown,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says James Ellsmoor, Director, Island Innovation.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>“Participants get a unique opportunity to exchange information with an extremely diverse array of people, and by keeping the event free we maximize the opportunities for participation. CARILEC is an association of electric energy solutions providers and other stakeholders operating in the electricity industry in the Caribbean region, Central and South Americas and Globally. The CARILEC Secretariat endeavors to improve communication among its members, providing technical information, training, capacity building, conference, and other services.\u00a0 In keeping with its mandate of improving of communication among its members and providing technical information, CARILEC will host a panel discussion at the Virtual Island Summit on September 10th<\/sup>, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. AST on the topic, \u2018The Caribbean Utility Model: A Drive Towards Sustainability and Resilience\u2019.<\/p>\nThis esteemed panel will consist of Dr. Cletus Bertin, Executive Director of CARILEC; Mr. Leroy Abraham, General Manager & CEO of the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation; Mr. Andrew Daka, Executive Director of Pacific Power Association (PPA); Mr. Roger Blackman, Managing Director of Barbados Light & Power Company Limited (BL&P); Mrs. Ruth Forbes, President and CEO of FortisTCI and panel moderator, Mr. Martyn Forde, Community Manager of CARILEC Renewable Energy Community (CAREC).<\/p>\n
