{"id":48343,"date":"2021-05-10T13:49:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T17:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=48343"},"modified":"2021-05-10T13:49:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T17:49:43","slug":"barbados-government-considering-ocean-energy-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/barbados-government-considering-ocean-energy-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Barbados Government Considering Ocean Energy Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) \u2014 The Bardabos government says it is considering having ocean energy technology operational on the island as part of the National Energy Policy target of 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship said it has conducted an Ocean Energy Consultancy, from January 2020 to March this year, to explore the feasibility of pursuing alternative energy sources and to select the right mix for the country ahead of the government\u2019s 2030 target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The consultants, ITPEnergised, supported by local and international experts in ocean energy, examined Fixed Offshore Wind (OSW), Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) and Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) projects around the island from a technical, environmental and logistical perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThey also investigated the legal framework, local supply chain, connectivity to the electricity grid, tourism impact and conducted various financial and map analyses to determine the practicality of these technologies in Barbados,\u201d according to a statement issued by the ministry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It said that the team also looked at wave energy, but concluded that this option was not suitable for Barbados, due to the level of unreadiness for this technology on a commercial scale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAs part of the consultants\u2019 preparatory work, they identified 16 possible ocean energy project scenarios. Of that number, six were selected and ranked in order of priority. In the end, the fixed and floating offshore wind turbine systems located off the north of the island were the preferred options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The statement said that the consultants paid special attention to the island\u2019s national parks, marine protected areas, turtle nesting sites, coral reefs buffer zones, the Grantley Adams International Airport and the exclusion zone, before selecting possible locations. \u201cAdditionally, three tourism surveys were undertaken for residents, tourism operators and businesses, and hotel and accommodations to garner initial feedback on ocean energy technologies in Barbados.
