{"id":53193,"date":"2021-07-05T17:05:14","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T21:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=53193"},"modified":"2021-07-08T12:37:13","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T16:37:13","slug":"caribbean-tree-planting-week-protecting-biodiversity-restoring-ecosystems-strengthening-cultural-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/caribbean-tree-planting-week-protecting-biodiversity-restoring-ecosystems-strengthening-cultural-roots\/","title":{"rendered":"Caribbean Tree Planting Week: Protecting Biodiversity, Restoring Ecosystems and Strengthening Cultural Roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"story-date\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>OECS Release<\/strong> \u2014 <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since February 2020, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cariphilalliance.org\/\">Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance<\/a>\u00a0(CariPhilAlliance) and its network of partners have mobilized youth, community-based and non-governmental organizations across 22 Caribbean countries and territories to plant more than 1.4 million trees, through the Caribbean Tree Planting Project (CTPP).<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"wrap\">\n<div id=\"start-of-content\" class=\"stories\">\n<div class=\"main story\" data-component=\"share-quote\" data-share-quote-id=\"story-content\" data-share-quote-url=\"http:\/\/prez.ly\/U4Gb\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"story__row\">\n<div class=\"story__column story__column--content\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<header class=\"story__headlines\" role=\"heading\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The upsurge in enthusiasm and advocacy, especially through youth action \u2013 the CariPhilAlliance Tree Planting Ambassadors have inspired\u00a0<strong>CariPhilAlliance\u2019s inaugural Caribbean Tree Planting Week (CTPW), to be celebrated virtually from July 5 to 11, 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The week\u2019s events, under the theme\u00a0<strong>\u201cProtecting Biodiversity and Cultural Heritage in the Caribbean,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0aim to build public awareness of the importance of planting trees \u2013 a critical part of the region\u2019s environmental and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"story__content story__content--with-wells\">At the same time, the week will reflect on how to achieve several of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015, especially the worst-performing SDGs in the Caribbean. According to the 2020 SDG Report, these include SDG #2 (Zero Hunger); #6 (Clean Water &amp; Sanitation); #8 (Decent Work &amp; Economic Growth); #9 (Industry, Innovation &amp; Infrastructure); #10 (Reducing Inequalities); #11 (Sustainable Cities &amp; Communities); #14 (Life Below Water); #15 (Life on Land); #16 (Peace, Justice &amp; Strong Institutions), among others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe at CariPhilAlliance believe that the voices of the Caribbean people \u2013 especially our youth \u2013 must be raised in support of a movement towards truly sustainable development across the region,\u201d said Professor Rosalea Hamilton, Chair, CariPhilAlliance &amp; CEO, LASCO Chin Foundation.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe Caribbean contributes less than one percent to global greenhouse emissions, but we are increasingly bearing the burden of the environmental devastation that climate change brings. We are hurting from the significant social and economic impacts over the years, now worsened by the COVID pandemic. We must address this existential crisis collectively, by building strong partnerships across boundaries and taking on the ground action.
