million people in Latin America and the Caribbean, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/b9e1619f4897444babf79b21907b7910\">new report<\/a>\u00a0released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraphs-items paragraphs-items-field-news-story paragraphs-items-field-news-story-full paragraphs-items-full\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-news-story field-type-paragraphs field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<div class=\"entity entity-paragraphs-item paragraphs-item-one-column-text\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-text-column field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Extreme weather and climate change are threatening the entire region, \u201cfrom the heights of Andean peaks to low-lying islands and mighty river basins\u201d, the study, \u201cState of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2020\u201d, states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Increasing temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, storms and retreating glaciers have all had a profound impact on human health and safety, food, water, energy security and the environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLatin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is among the regions most challenged by extreme hydro-meteorological events,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"WMO\" href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WMO<\/a>\u00a0Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas said in a statement to mark the release of the document.<\/p>\n<div (file)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>\u2018Far-reaching and long-lasting repercussions\u2019<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr Taalas noted the impacts include \u201cwater and energy-related shortages, agricultural losses, displacement and compromised health and safety, all compounding challenges from the\u00a0<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Concerns about fires and the loss of forests are also raised in the document. Maximum temperatures at some stations showed record-breaking values with temperatures up to 10 \u00b0C above normal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Widespread drought across Latin America and the Caribbean had significant impacts, including lowering rivers level, the report notes, which have hampered inland shipping routes, reduced crop yields and food production, leading to worsening food insecurity in many areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Forest loss is an important contributor to climate change due to carbon dioxide release, the study warns: between 2000 and 2016, nearly 55 million hectares of forest were lost, constituting more than 91% of forest losses worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The increased rate of wildfires in 2020 caused irreversible damages to ecosystems, including adverse impacts to vital ecosystem services and livelihoods dependent on them. (2 September 2019)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The rising tide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2020 the Caribbean sea surface temperature hit a record high, and the report shows how marine life, coastal ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them are facing increasing threats from ocean acidification and heat and rising sea levels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Latin America and the Caribbean more than 27% of the population live in coastal areas, with an estimated 6\u20138% living in areas that are at high or very high risk of being affected by coastal hazards.<br \/>\nGlaciers have been retreating during the last decades, and ice mass loss has been accelerated since 2010, in line with an increase in seasonal and annual temperatures and a significant reduction in annual precipitation in the region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55243\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55243\" class=\"wp-image-55243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5-300x136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5-1024x464.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5-768x348.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5-600x272.jpg 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UN-5.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Ocean Image Bank\/Matt Curnock |<\/strong>Coastal and marine ecosystems provide food, livelihoods, and coastal protection to more than a billion people worldwide.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Forewarned is forearmed<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Greater political commitment and more financial support to strengthen early warning systems and operational weather, climate and hydrological services, are identified in the report, as ways to support risk management and adaptation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early warning systems can reduce disaster risk and disaster impacts, but the WMO study warns that they are underdeveloped in LAC region, particularly in Central and South America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mangroves are singled out as an exceptional resource for adaptation and mitigation, with the capacity to store three to four times more carbon than most of the forests on the planet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the mangrove area in the region declined 20 percent between 2001-2018.
