November 9th, 2021<\/p>\n

Nineteen members of staff from the Generation Department, at both operational and Management levels, participated in a two-week training programme that examined the operations of the newly installed W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 engines at the Cane Hall Power Station.<\/p>\n

The training commenced October 25th, under Senior W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 Instructor, Mr. Matti Kakko. According to Mr. Kakko, these latest model of generators (W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 6L32) boast up-to-date technology. He said the generators contain miller timing which have fewer combustion chambers to reduce nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions and they are therefore environmentally friendly. Mr. Kakkoo said that proper maintenance of the engines will ensure that they operate at the optimal level.<\/p>\n

The participants addressed relevant topics during the two-week period namely engine general design and function, function of engine built-on systems, fuel oil, lubricating oil and cooling water requirements, engine operation, engine maintenance operations, general design of power plant, function of auxiliary systems, auxiliary systems operation and auxiliary systems maintenance operations.<\/p>\n

The training was essential for the VINLEC staff in order to ensure they are familiar with the new technology such that they can adequately address any challenges from the new installation. The participants noted that they are aware that the training helped to improve their knowledge about advancements in new generation technology. They are now better prepared to operate these new generators. One participant said, \u201cWe have to be on our best game to ensure they function as efficiently as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

In adherence to COVID-19 protocols, the participants were divided into two groups. One group was stationed at the Engineering Complex Training Room with Mr. Kakko, while the other group was stationed at the Engineering Complex Conference Room. The training ended last Friday, November 5th.<\/p>\n
