The planet is facing the triple crises of climate disruption, biodiversity loss and pollution, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres told the\u00a0One Ocean Summit\u00a0on Friday, warning that \u201cthe ocean shoulders much of the burden\u201d.<\/p>\n

As the ocean serves as a giant carbon and heat sink, it is growing warmer and more acidic, causing its ecosystems to suffer.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolar ice is melting and global weather patterns are changing\u201d, the UN chief said in his video\u00a0message<\/a>\u00a0to the conference, taking place this week in the northern French coastal city of Brest.<\/p>\n

Ripple effect<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The communities who rely on the ocean are hurting as well, he added: \u201cMore than three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods\u201d.<\/p>\n

He painted a grim picture of dwindling marine species; dying coral reefs; coastal ecosystems turned into \u201cvast dead zones\u201d as they serve as dumping grounds for sewage; and nutrients and seas choked by plastic waste.<\/p>\n

Moreover, fish stocks are being threatened by over and destructive fishing practices, along with illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must change tack\u201d, underscored the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

Adhering to the law<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is 40 years since the signing of the\u00a0UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. \u201cThe importance of legal certainty in the ocean is paramount\u201d, said Mr. Guterres.<\/p>\n

He upheld that the second\u00a0UN Ocean Conference, which will be held in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July this year, is \u201can opportunity to cement the role of the ocean\u201d in global efforts to achieve the\u00a0Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0(SDGs) and implement the\u00a0Paris Agreement\u00a0on climate change.<\/p>\n

Blue economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The UN chief stressed that intensified efforts must be made to protect the ocean, saying that a \u201csustainable blue economy can drive economic progress and job creation\u201d, while protecting climate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need\u00a0more, and more effective partnerships, to address land-based sources of marine pollution\u2026urgency in the deployment of offshore renewable energy, which can provide clean power and employment, and\u2026[less] fossil fuels in the ocean economy\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Guterres welcomed \u201cencouraging steps\u201d taken by some countries, including France, to\u00a0end\u00a0single-use plastics and\u00a0urged others to follow suit.<\/p>\n

Nature-based solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With some 90 per cent of world trade transported by sea, he said that shipping accounts for nearly three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shipping sector needs to contribute to the necessary 45 per cent cut in emissions needed by 2030, and zero emissions by 2050, in the effort to keep alive our hopes of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius\u201d, spelled out the UN chief.<\/p>\n

A breakthrough on adaptation and resilience for coastal communities whose lives, homes and livelihoods are at risk is also imperative.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must capitalize on the opportunities that nature-based solutions, such as mangroves and seagrasses, provide\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Viable ocean economy\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To promote a sustainable ocean economy, the Secretary-General highlighted the need for global partnerships and investment along with increased support to ocean science \u201cso our actions are based on knowledge and understanding of the ocean\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cToo much remains unmapped, unobserved and unexplored\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Throughout the UN\u00a0Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, Mr. Guterres encouraged concerned citizens everywhere to \u201cdeliver on our collective promise of a healthy blue planet for future generations\u201d.<\/p>\n
