{"id":70821,"date":"2022-04-26T13:52:36","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T17:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=70821"},"modified":"2022-04-26T13:52:36","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T17:52:36","slug":"new-gpl-substation-to-help-expand-reach-distribute-power-from-gas-to-energy-project-amaila-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/new-gpl-substation-to-help-expand-reach-distribute-power-from-gas-to-energy-project-amaila-falls\/","title":{"rendered":"New GPL substation to help expand reach &#038; distribute power from gas-to-energy project, Amaila falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-70823\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-6-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-6-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-6-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-6.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guyana will soon get energy from two forthcoming generation projects and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is moving to establish a new substation at Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) that will help the company expand its reach and consolidate operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two new energy generation projects are the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.gy\/2022\/03\/30\/gas-to-energy-project-can-help-guyana-counter-infamous-dutch-disease-regional-economist\/\">Wales gas-to-energy<\/a>\u00a0project and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.gy\/2021\/11\/01\/china-railway-group-given-green-light-to-build-amaila-falls-hydro-project\/\">Amaila Falls hydropower<\/a>\u00a0project. Both projects will help Guyana cut electricity costs and meet increasing demand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And GPL\u2019s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bharat Dindyal said that a forthcoming \u201cstate-of-the-art\u201d Eccles substation will be instrumental in distributing the power generated at these two projects.<\/p>\n<p>Two transmission lines, he explained, will transmit the power generated from natural gas at Wales to the Eccles substation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70825\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70825\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70825\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-3-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/GPL-3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GPL\u2019s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bharat Dindyal<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFrom Eccles, there\u2019s going to be an interconnection to our existing substation at Sophia (on the East Coast of Demerara) but we\u2019re hoping eventually that the 230 KV transmission will be extended to Williamsburg on the Corentyne,\u201d Dindyal said at an energy roundtable discussion at the Marriott Hotel on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added, \u201cThe future of the system will see not only power being dropped off in Georgetown but in the West Coast of Berbice because there\u2019s going to be tremendous development we expect there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similarly, power generated from the Amaila Falls hydropower project will be fed into this new Eccles substation and distributed to other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guyana has some of the highest electricity rates in the Americas and is about 97 per cent dependent on imported fossil fuels, mainly diesel- that have harmful environmental effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last year, the country spent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.gy\/2022\/02\/17\/guyana-spent-us-150m-importing-fuel-for-electricity-last-year\/\">US$150 million<\/a>\u00a0to generate electricity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main power grid- the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System which is managed by GPL, supplies 78 percent of the country\u2019s energy needs.
