{"id":71650,"date":"2022-05-18T06:41:02","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T10:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=71650"},"modified":"2022-05-18T06:41:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T10:41:02","slug":"carilec-is-ready-to-respond-to-2022s-hurricane-season-cdap-is-fully-funded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/carilec-is-ready-to-respond-to-2022s-hurricane-season-cdap-is-fully-funded\/","title":{"rendered":"CARILEC is ready to respond to 2022\u2019s hurricane season- CDAP is fully funded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71654\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CEO-Snip-300x181.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CEO-Snip-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CEO-Snip-768x463.png 768w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CEO-Snip-600x361.png 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CEO-Snip.png 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By: Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p>May 17, 2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) Disaster\u00a0Assistance Programme (CDAP) is fully funded going into the 2022 hurricane season as the agency stands ready to assist in the event of the devastation the region saw with Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Dorian over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr Cletus Bertin, Executive Director of CARILEC, told Caribbean Magazine Plus: \u201cCARILEC\u2019s Disaster\u00a0Assistance Programme (CDAP) is based on a mutual assistance arrangement with 27 member utilities that contribute to a fund that has been in existence for over two decades and give out assistance whereby when a disaster strikes one of the participating member utilities, they make a request to CARILEC for assistance from member utilities who would have already been lined up and prepared to respond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71653\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71653\" class=\"wp-image-71653\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cletus-Bertin-226x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cletus-Bertin-226x300.png 226w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cletus-Bertin-600x797.png 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cletus-Bertin.png 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Cletus Bertin<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added: \u201cSo Disaster Assistance crews, technician line workers engineers would go into the afflicted territory post disaster and assist in ramping up the restoration effort and that is funded through the fund that would have already been accumulated. So the affected utility would not have any extensive cash outlay to bring in those resources to assess. The members themselves, the participating utilities, contribute a specific amount every year until the fund reaches the cap which is actually now it has reached and so they have ceased contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is an agreed upon cap by the member utility companies and when there is a request for assistance, the funds are drawn from that pool, but the utility being assisted would just be responsible to provide accommodation, food and on the ground transportation for the workers coming in to help with restoration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is welcomed news since last year CARILEC in collaboration with the\u00a0Regional Task Force for Climate-Resilient Energy Supplies\u00a0through the\u00a0CARICOM Secretariat, launched a consultancy project for the\u00a0Development of an Emergency Response Strategy and Action Plan (ERSAP)\u00a0for the region\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CARILEC is also leading the region towards greener energy and has brought in renewable energy suppliers into its agency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr Bertin also said: \u201cSo we are doing all in our power to facilitate the adoption of sustainable green clean energy sources, through advocacy, policy positions, training, capacity building networking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have a tremendous online forum called CAREC, the CARILEC Renewable Energy Community, where we run webinars and face to face events offline to promote the adoption of renewable energy and also energy efficiency, which is an important part of the energy transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He continued, \u201cOur membership is very much supportive of the repositioning of the association.
