{"id":72960,"date":"2022-07-20T15:19:16","date_gmt":"2022-07-20T19:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=72960"},"modified":"2022-07-21T11:47:04","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T15:47:04","slug":"june-2022-was-earths-6th-warmest-on-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/june-2022-was-earths-6th-warmest-on-record\/","title":{"rendered":"June 2022 Was Earth&#8217;s 6th-Warmest on Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"image field\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" role=\"group\">Antarctic sea ice shrank to a record low for the month<\/h3>\n<p>June\u2019s average global temperature continued 2022\u2019s remarkably warm trend, as both the month and the year so far ranked sixth warmest on record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<section class=\"l-section paragraph paragraph--type-rich-text paragraph--display-mode-default paragraph--width-body-indent-none MIN XXS XS SM MD LG\" data-observe-resizes=\"\" data-observing=\"true\">\n<div class=\"l-section__content\">\n<div id=\"paragraph-id-16987\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body-formatted-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<p>In addition, global sea ice reached near-record lows last month, with Antarctica seeing its lowest June ice coverage on record, according to scientists from NOAA\u2019s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a closer look into NOAA\u2019s latest monthly global climate report:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate by the numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>June 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The average global surface (land and ocean) temperature in June was 1.57 degrees F (0.87 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average of 59.9 degrees F (15.5 degrees C), making June the sixth warmest in the 143-year record.<\/p>\n<p>June 2022 marked the 46th consecutive June and the 450th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th-century average. The ten-warmest Junes on record have all occurred since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at just land temperature, June 2022 was the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s second-warmest June on record \u2014 2.81 degrees F (1.56 degrees C) above average \u2014 behind June 2021\u2019s record high land temperature. Europe and Asia also had their second-warmest June land temperature on record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The year to date | January through June<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first half of 2022 ranked sixth warmest on record, with a global temperature of 1.53 degrees F (0.85 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average of 56.3 degrees F (13.5 degrees C).<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/global\/202206\/supplemental\/page-2\">NCEI\u2019s Global Annual Temperature Outlook<\/a>, there is a greater than 99% chance that 2022 will rank among the 10-warmest years on record, but only an 11% chance that it will rank among the top five warmest.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"A map of the world plotted with some of the most significant climate events that occurred during June 2022. Only June 2019 had a smaller sea ice extent. Antarctic sea ice extent for June was a record low at 4.68 million square miles, or about 471,000 square miles below average. Arctic sea ice extent last month was 347,000 square miles below the 1981-2010 average \u2014 roughly the size of Sweden, Norway and Denmark combined \u2014 and the 10th-smallest June extent in the 44-year record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tropical cyclone activity was about average:<\/strong> June 2022 produced five named storms across the globe, which is near-normal activity for June. Only one of those, Hurricane Blas in the Eastern Pacific, reached tropical cyclone strength (74 mph).
