But now soaring household bills have pushed running costs to the top of home buyers\u2019 list of priorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Modern new homes are, without doubt, cheaper to run than their leaky, creaky, charming Victorian and Edwardian counterparts \u2013although they are often also more expensive to buy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite this, estate agents say buyers are increasingly interested in the energy efficiency of homes. The site will also feature a new station, offices, shops, restaurants, a cinema, open space, several schools and an upgraded shopping centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Swedish power company Vattenfall is providing an on-site energy centre that will warm the homes using only renewable energy, with the help of the UK\u2019s largest installation of heat pumps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The aim is for the entire site to run without producing any carbon emissions by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guide prices start at \u00a3400,000 for a one-bedroom flat, \u00a3610,000 for a two-bedroom flat and \u00a3810,000 for a three-bedroom flat.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">The Zero<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_76945\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76945\" class=\"wp-image-76945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hamptons-300x206.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-76945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Triple-glazed flats at The Zero in SW20 (Picture: Hamptons)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In deepest south-west London the clue is in the name at a new scheme in leafy Raynes Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Zero is an award-winning zero-carbon boutique development of 35 flats, built to be airtight so that no precious heat is lost. This means triple glazing, top-spec insulation and extra-thick walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But an integrated ventilation system means that the flats never get stuffy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Inside, the kitchen appliances are low energy and there are boiling water taps, while solar panels are fitted on the roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy is stored in an array of Tesla Powerwall batteries and redirected to the individual homes to augment their power supply. In winter the batteries can store cheaper off-peak energy for owners to use whenever they want.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is estimated that bills will be around 75 per cent lower than in a conventional flat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prices at The Zero start at \u00a3500,000 via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamptons.co.uk\/the-zero#\/\">Hamptons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whetstone Gardens<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buyers looking for a north\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/?ico=auto_link_lifestyle_P20_LNK1\">London<\/a>\u00a0home have been snapping up flats at Whetstone Gardens where more than half the 20 homes have already been sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of conventional, fossil fuel-burning boilers to generate heating and hot water, all these homes are fitted with solar panels and have infrared heating systems which run on electricity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Green roofs add insulation as well as providing a habitat for wildlife, and of course there are charging points provided for electric cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prices at the EPC A-rated development start at \u00a3385,000 via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnardmarcus.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barnard Marcus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Colina Mews<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_76947\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76947\" class=\"wp-image-76947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Colina-Mew-300x228.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"456\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-76947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reserve a home now at Colina Mews in N15 and get two years of power costs covered (Picture: Latimer)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy efficiency is fast becoming a valuable marketing tool for housebuilders such as Latimer, which claims its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forevergreenlanes.com\/\">Colina Mews development<\/a>\u00a0in Turnpike Lane is so cheap to run that buyers can save \u00a34,000 per year in fuel bills by buying one of its three-bedroom duplex apartments, compared to a similar-sized Victorian terrace home with an EPC rating of D nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Latimer says this is because of features including triple glazing, a communal heat and power system, low-energy lighting and insulation of a high standard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bills will certainly be low initially because, as prices rise around us, Latimer is offering to cover power costs for two years to buyers who reserve a property now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The homes will be completed in January, and prices start at \u00a3790,000 via Evergreen by Latimer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Post House<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a green home surrounded by actual greenery\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theposthouseclapham.com\/\">The Post House<\/a>\u00a0is a new boutique development overlooking Clapham Common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a reboot of the former Clapham Common Post Office &amp; Sorting Office which now contains 14 one and two-bedroom flats priced from \u00a3475,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eco-credentials include a \u2018smart grid\u2019 system that draws electricity from the grid at off-peak times and then stores it until required, plus underfloor heating which can be controlled via a smartphone app, and energy-efficient LED lighting.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Knight\u2019s Park<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But green homes aren\u2019t just a London thing. One of the UK\u2019s largest low-energy developments is well under way at Eddington, two miles north-west of Cambridge city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By 2024 there will be more than 800 new homes at Knights Park, with a central energy centre to provide the whole site with heating and hot water \u2013 power is generated using solar photovoltaic panels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The homes have triple glazing and high-performing insulation to minimise heat loss, while a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system ensures a constant flow of clean, fresh filtered air to each property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Outdoors a rainwater recycling system collects and filters rainwater which is then reused to run washing machines and flush toilets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prices for a new home at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knightspark-eddington.co.uk\/\">Knights Park<\/a>\u00a0start at \u00a3339,950.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So Resi Hope Green<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another eco-village is taking shape at Stanford-le-Hope, in Essex, set between the capital and the east coast.
