Odin Jaeger | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A facility described as the world\u2019s largest floating wind farm produced its first power over the weekend, with more turbines set to come online before the year is out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement Monday, Norwegian energy firm\u00a0<span id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-1\" class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/EQNR\/\">Equinor<\/a><span id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\"><\/button><\/span><\/span> \u2014 better known for its work in the oil and gas industry \u2014 said power production from Hywind Tampen\u2019s first wind turbine took place on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While wind is a renewable energy source, Hywind Tampen will be used to help power operations at oil and gas fields in the North Sea. Equinor said Hywind Tampen\u2019s first power was sent to the Gullfaks oil and gas field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI am proud that we have now started production at Hywind Tampen, Norway\u2019s first and the world\u2019s largest floating wind farm,\u201d Geir Tungesvik, Equinor\u2019s executive vice president for projects, drilling and procurement, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is a unique project, the first wind farm in the world powering producing oil and gas installations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hywind Tampen is located around 140 kilometers (86.9 miles) off the coast of Norway, in depths ranging from 260 to 300 meters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seven of the wind farm\u2019s turbines are slated to come on stream in 2022, with installation of the remaining four taking place in 2023. When complete, Equinor says it will have a system capacity of 88 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alongside Equinor, the other companies involved in the project are V\u00e5r Energi, INPEX Idemitsu, Petoro, Wintershall Dea and OMV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Equinor said Hywind Tampen was expected to meet around 35% of the Gullfaks and Snorre fields\u2019 electricity demand. \u201cThis will cut CO2 emissions from the fields by about 200,000 tonnes per year,\u201d the company added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The use of a floating wind farm to help power the production of fossil fuels is likely to spark some controversy, however.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fossil fuels\u2019 effect on the environment is considerable and the United Nations says that, since the 19th century, \u201chuman activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the COP27 climate change summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, last week, the U.N. Secretary General\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/07\/were-on-a-highway-to-climate-hell-un-chief-guterres-says.html\">issued a stark warning to attendees.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the fight of our lives, and we are losing,\u201d Antonio Guterres said. \u201cGreenhouse gas emissions keep growing, global temperatures keep rising, and our planet is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ArticleBody-smallSubtitle\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">An emerging industry<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Equinor said the turbines at Hywind Tampen were installed on a floating concrete structure, with a joint mooring system. One advantage of floating turbines is that they can be installed in deeper waters than fixed-bottom ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back in 2017, Equinor started operations at Hywind Scotland, a five-turbine, 30 MW facility it calls the world\u2019s first floating wind farm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since then, a number of major companies have made moves in the sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Aug. 2021, RWE Renewables and Kansai Electric Power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/24\/japan-targets-floating-wind-farms-for-its-deep-coastal-waters.html\">signed an agreement<\/a>\u00a0to assess the feasibility of a \u201clarge-scale floating offshore wind project\u201d in waters off Japan\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Sept. of that year, Norwegian company Statkraft\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/21\/worlds-largest-floating-wind-farm-takes-another-step-forward.html\">announced a long-term purchasing agreement relating to a 50 MW floating wind farm<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which it has also dubbed the \u201cworld\u2019s largest\u201d \u2014 off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And a few months later, in Dec. 2021, plans for three major offshore wind developments in Australia \u2014 two of which are looking to incorporate floating wind tech \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/23\/huge-floating-wind-farms-are-being-planned-off-the-coast-of-australia.html\">were announced.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this year, meanwhile<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0the White House said it was targeting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/16\/the-us-looks-to-rival-europe-and-asia-with-massive-floating-offshore-wind-plan.html\">15 gigawatts of floating offshore wind capacity by the year 2035.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Biden-Harris Administration is launching coordinated actions to develop new floating offshore wind platforms, an emerging clean energy technology that will help the United States lead on offshore wind,\u201d a statement, which was also published by U.S. Department of the Interior, said at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As well as the 15 GW ambition, a \u201cFloating Offshore Wind Shot\u201d aims to reduce the costs of floating technologies by over 70% by the year 2035.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBringing floating offshore wind technology to scale will unlock new opportunities for offshore wind power off the coasts of California and Oregon, in the Gulf of Maine, and beyond,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-77135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/CNBC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"83\" height=\"54\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KEY POINTS Norwegian energy firm Equinor said power production from Hywind Tampen\u2019s first wind turbine took place on Sunday afternoon.
