Adkins <\/a>Jun 13, 2023<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a historic visit to The Bahamas, Vice President Harris announced new initiatives to support Caribbean countries in their clean energy transitions and in mitigating the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs neighbors, the United States shares common bonds and interests with the Caribbean nations,\u201d the vice president said June 8. She called the U.S.-Caribbean partnership \u201cessential to our mutual security and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She made her comments as she co-hosted the U.S.-Caribbean Leaders Meeting in Nassau with Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas. (\u00a9 Dante Carrer\/Reuters)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During her trip, Harris announced more than $100 million to address climate, energy, food security and humanitarian assistance in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Harris is the highest-ranking U.S. government official to visit The Bahamas since its 1973 independence.<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Progress on the climate front<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Harris noted that \u201cCaribbean nations are on the front lines\u201d in regard to the climate crisis. She said powerful storms can wipe out economic progress, and low-lying islands face erosion, flooding and deadly storm surge from rising seas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is why last year, leaders launched the\u00a0<a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"PACC 2030 | State Dept.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/pacc2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">U.S.-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030<\/a>\u00a0(PACC 2030) during the\u00a0<a title=\"Summit of the Americas inspires commitments on migration, green energy and climate | ShareAmerica\" href=\"https:\/\/share.america.gov\/summit-of-the-americas-inspires-big-commitments\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Summit of the Americas.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the leaders met last year in Los Angeles, she said, the United States has helped move forward clean energy projects throughout the region, including projects in:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>St. Lucia<\/strong>, to power schools, hospitals and water treatment plants with solar microgrids.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dominica and St. Kitts and Nevis<\/strong>, to develop commercial geothermal power projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong>, to train a clean energy workforce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dominican Republic<\/strong>, to integrate battery storage in its energy grid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jamaica<\/strong>, to develop a national emergency commercial infrastructure system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Harris said the region\u2019s security and prosperity require \u201cthe type of collaboration and partnership\u201d developed over the last two years.<\/p>\n<h2>How the U.S. supports PACC 2030<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1408058\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1408058\">&nbsp;<figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1408058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>&nbsp;<figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1408058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<div id=\"attachment_82185\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82185\" class=\"wp-image-82185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra-300x203.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra-1024x693.png 1024w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra-768x520.png 768w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra-600x406.png 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Zahra.png 1143w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Zahra Ennis works for a small solar power company in Jamaica.
