Or maybe you leave the tumble dryer on standby whilst you are at work?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">fI so, you could be enabling the \u2018vampire appliances\u2019 to drain your energy funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vampire appliances \u2013 so named because they suck the most energy from the grid \u2013 are responsible for, on average, \u00a3147 of hidden costs on our energy bills according to data from Quotezone.co.uk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And some of the biggest culprits are those household items which you might least expect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main way appliances and devices drain excess energy is through being left on standby mode,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quotezone.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"image noopener\">Quotezone<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It revealed 23% of household electricity use was wasted on vampire appliances that consume a lot of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoneypages.com\/household-bills\/energy-price-cap-change-stay-in-control-of-your-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"image noopener\">energy<\/a>\u00a0even when they\u2019re turned off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And it\u2019s those smaller items which are doing the most consuming \u2013 such as smart speakers \u2013 along with consoles and computers which account for around 5% of the electricity bill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More obvious white appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers have also made Quotezone\u2019s list of top ten vampire appliances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Greg Wilson, founder at Quotezone.co.uk, said: \u201cThe simplest way for families to reduce their energy usage and save money is to eliminate unnecessary electricity use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLeaving appliances on standby means that they\u2019ll still be draining power even when you\u2019re not using them which causes unnecessary costs on your energy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoneypages.com\/household-bills\/bills-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"image noopener\">bills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSomething as simple as flicking a switch can prevent the vampire appliances from eating up almost a quarter of your energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are the ten appliances that use the most standby energy so you know what to switch off\u2026<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Games console<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides the running costs, leaving your gaming console on standby for a whole year will cost you \u00a327.52.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Modern gaming consoles are much more powerful than they used to be and consume a lot of energy because they are connected to the internet even when they\u2019re in standby mode.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Desktop computer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A lot of people are working from home nowadays and are using their computers for most of the day which already adds a considerable sum of money to their electricity bills. Leaving the computer on standby will add another \u00a313.39 to their annual bills.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Laptops<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The annual standby cost of laptops is \u00a310.41. The good thing with laptops is that you can unplug them as soon as they\u2019ve got enough charge instead of letting them eat up power all day.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Smart speakers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Smart speakers consume 3W per hour on standby. People usually only use smart speakers for a few hours per day but if they\u2019re left plugged in and on standby all year round then it\u2019ll add \u00a37.44 to annual electricity bills.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Dishwasher<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dishwashers use the same amount of standby energy per hour as smart speakers, with an annual cost of \u00a37.44.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019re doing multiple loads each day then you may not want to leave it on standby but it\u2019s still worth switching it off for the night.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Washing machine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You pay less than 1p for an hour of standby use of your washing machine, yet it\u2019ll cost \u00a36.45 for an entire year. With the same amount of money you can run two 3W LED bulbs for an entire year for eight hours a day.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Tumble dryer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tumble dryers are one of the highest energy-consuming appliances, costing you \u00a31.20 per cycle. Just like washing machines, leaving tumble dryers on standby will add another unnecessary \u00a36.45 to your annual bills.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>Microwave<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A lot of households leave their microwaves on all the time even when they only use them for less than an hour per day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Microwaves already have a high daily active cost but if they\u2019re also never switched off, then it\u2019ll cost families an extra \u00a35.95 per year.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong>TV<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The annual standby cost for a TV is \u00a35.7 but it\u2019ll be even more expensive if you have a set-top box. TVs are already one of the energy-hungriest devices so make sure to switch them off when they\u2019re not in use to cut back on costs.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><strong>Printer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As everything\u2019s online now, printers don\u2019t usually find a lot of everyday use for average households.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, they\u2019re often left to sit in standby mode all year round costing \u00a31.24 per year.
