{"id":82922,"date":"2023-07-31T10:25:35","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T14:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=82922"},"modified":"2023-07-31T10:25:35","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T14:25:35","slug":"wsp-to-accelerate-battery-powered-train-development-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wsp-to-accelerate-battery-powered-train-development-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"WSP to accelerate battery-powered train development in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"small-margin-children ft-component ft-structural ft-content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page-summary ft-component ft-static ft-page-summary\"><strong>WSP to deliver report on roll-out of battery-powered trains in the UK for Rail Safety and Standards Board<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"medium-margin-children ft-component ft-structural ft-content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"news-details\">\n<div class=\"U--mb--70\"><strong><time>25 JULY 2023 &#8211; UNITED KINGDOM<\/time><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leading multi-disciplinary professional services consulting firm WSP has been appointed by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) to advise on the delivery of battery-powered trains on the UK rail network.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Working closely with industry stakeholders, including Network Rail and the Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT), WSP will produce an evidence-based report providing industry with clear recommendations to optimise and standardise the wider and strategic adoption of battery power on UK railways.\u00a0WSP will draw on its extensive experience of battery train development for the Norwegian and Swedish rail networks, and in the UK, where it has previously explored the potential for battery train operation for Network Rail and the GBRTT.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2018, DfT\u00a0announced its ambition\u00a0to remove all diesel-only trains from its network by 2040 and commitment to achieve net zero railways by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With battery power providing an attractive, cost-efficient solution to complement further electrification work on the rail network, WSP\u2019s work will support GBRTT\u2019s emergent thinking around battery trains as part of its thirty-year strategy for rail, optimising the best solution for each battery route.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Steven Hart, Associate Director, Rail Planning at WSP, said<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>\u201cDecarbonising the UK\u2019s transport system will be key if we are to meet our climate commitments, and battery power\u2019s potential as a cost-effective method of supporting these efforts is tremendous.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to be working collaboratively with RSSB and industry stakeholders to develop guidance for future standardised, safe and resilient battery train deployments in the UK and to support the rail industry in driving down its emissions in line with the UK\u2019s net zero targets.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Aaron Barrett, RSSB Lead Research Analyst said:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><em>To date, the design and roll-out of battery trains has been undertaken on a scheme-by-scheme basis. This has resulted in bespoke designs with manufacturers having their own approach to battery charging.
