{"id":83204,"date":"2023-08-17T11:03:50","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T15:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=83204"},"modified":"2023-08-17T13:03:49","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T17:03:49","slug":"record-shattering-earth-had-its-hottest-july-in-174-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/record-shattering-earth-had-its-hottest-july-in-174-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Record shattering: Earth had its hottest July in 174 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-83206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA-300x62.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"62\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA-300x62.png 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA.png 477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global sea surface temperature hit record high for 4th-consecutive month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>August 14, 2023<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earth just roasted under its hottest July on record, according to scientists from NOAA\u2019s\u00a0National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the fourth-consecutive month, the global ocean surface temperature also hit a record high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s a closer look into NOAA\u2019s latest monthly global climate report:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Climate by the numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>July 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The average global surface temperature in July was 2.02 degrees F (1.12 degrees C) above average, ranking it as the warmest July in NOAA\u2019s 174-year record. Because\u00a0July\u00a0is the globe\u2019s\u00a0warmest\u00a0month of the year from a climatological perspective,\u00a0July\u00a02023\u00a0was also likely Earth\u2019s warmest\u00a0<em>month<\/em>\u00a0on record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">July 2023 was the first time an average July temperature exceeded 1.8 degrees F (1.0 degree C) above the long-term average. Also of note, last month was 0.36 of a degree F (0.20 of a degree C) warmer than the previous July record from 2021. July 2023 marked the 47th-consecutive July and the 533rd-consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th-century average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the fourth-consecutive month, the global ocean surface temperature hit a record high as El Ni\u00f1o conditions that emerged in June continued into July. Globally, July 2023 set a record for the highest monthly sea surface temperature anomaly \u2014 which indicates how much warmer or cooler temperatures are from the long-term average \u2014 of any month in NOAA\u2019s climate record, with an anomaly of 1.78 degrees F or 0.99 of a degree C. On July 13, NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center issued a statement announcing a greater than 95% chance that El Nino will continue through winter in the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The year to date (YTD, January through July)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first seven months of 2023 ranked as the third-warmest such YTD on record, with a global temperature of 1.85 degrees F (1.03 degrees C) above the 20th-century average of 56.9 degrees F (13.8 degrees C).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to NCEI\u2019s Global Annual Temperature Outlook and data through July, it is virtually certain (&gt; 99.0%) that 2023 will rank among the five-warmest years on record, with a nearly 50% probability that 2023 will rank as the warmest on record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2-300x205.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2-1024x701.png 1024w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2-768x526.png 768w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2-600x411.png 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/NOAA2.png 1157w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"caption-text\">A map of the world plotted with some of the most significant climate events that occurred during July 2023. Globally, sea ice extent in July 2023 was about 470,000 square miles less than the previous record low from July 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Antarctic sea ice coverage ranked lowest on record for a third-consecutive month, running about 1 million square miles \u2014 roughly the size of Argentina \u2014 below the 1991\u20132020 average. This was 580,000 square miles below the previous record low from July 2022. The Arctic sea ice extent for July 2023 ranked as the 12th smallest in the satellite record, about 220,000 square miles below the 1991\u20132020 average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storm count was near average in the tropics last month:<\/strong>\u00a0Eight named storms occurred around the world in July, which is near the 1991\u20132020 average of 9.6. Seven of those reached tropical cyclone strength (winds of 74 mph or higher), including three that reached major tropical cyclone strength (winds of 111 mph or higher).
