{"id":83474,"date":"2023-09-06T13:02:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T17:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/?p=83474"},"modified":"2023-09-06T13:05:22","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T17:05:22","slug":"jps-foundation-signs-mou-with-the-uwi-mona-16m-sponsorship-to-support-cape-stem-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/jps-foundation-signs-mou-with-the-uwi-mona-16m-sponsorship-to-support-cape-stem-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"JPS Foundation Signs MOU with The UWI Mona &#8211; $16M Sponsorship to support CAPE STEM Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-78752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/JPS-1-300x78.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/JPS-1-300x78.png 300w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/JPS-1-768x201.png 768w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/JPS-1-600x157.png 600w, https:\/\/carilec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/JPS-1.png 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">(Kingston September 4, 2023)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">The JPS Foundation and The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will see the JPS Foundation providing support for UWI\u2019s annual Workshops for students preparing to sit Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exams (CAPE).\u00a0\u00a0The workshops are designed to strengthen the performance of students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">The sponsorship will total US$100,000 or approximately JM$16M over 5 years, and will facilitate a reduction in the workshop price to students, from potentially $5,000 to $1,500.\u00a0\u00a0The price will be held at $1,500 for the next 5 years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">The CAPE workshops allow high school students to access UWI labs, improve their knowledge base, and improve their preparation to sit the exams, particularly in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Geography and Math. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0 x_ContentPasted1\">JPS President &amp; CEO, Steve Berberich, in his remarks at the signing ceremony, noted that STEM subjects are going to be pivotal to national development.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSTEM education is going to be critical for this great country to stay abreast of development, advance its economy and create jobs for its people,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0He also noted that the CAPE sponsorship was a natural outgrowth of the JPS Foundation\u2019s ongoing sponsorship of the CSEC Electrical exams.\u00a0\u00a0This latter sponsorship has seen the Foundation paying for high school students to sit the CSEC Electrical exams for the past 7 years, at an overall cost of $10M. Over 3,000 students have benefitted from this initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0 x_ContentPasted1\">Deputy Principal of the UWI, Mona, Dr. Tomlin Paul, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of academic-industry partnership.\u00a0\u00a0This support, specifically for the Faculty of Science &amp; Technology, will help to prepare Grade 12 and 13 students across the island.\u00a0\u00a0The Workshops, he noted, typically reach up to 41% of the students sitting Physics and Chemistry.\u00a0\u00a0The sessions are especially useful, he noted, where some schools may not have the laboratory facilities to support the Internal Assessment portion of the CAPE syllabus.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThis is also an important step,\u201d he noted, in equipping students to meet matriculation requirements at our tertiary institutions in the important area of STEM education.
