Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As climate change impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Creating a positive ripple effect<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The theme of World Water Day 2024 is \u2018Water for Peace\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect \u2013 fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We must act upon the realization that water is not only a resource to be used and competed over \u2013 it is a human right, intrinsic to every aspect of life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This World Water Day, we all need to unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.<\/p>\n<div class=\"heading-border block\">\n<h3>Did you know?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>2.2 billion still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwater.org\/publications\/who\/unicef-joint-monitoring-program-update-report-2023\">WHO\/UNICEF, 2023<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Roughly half of the world\u2019s population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg2\/downloads\/outreach\/IPCC_AR6_WGII_FactSheet_FoodAndWater.pdf\">IPCC, 2022<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Water-related disasters have dominated the list of disasters over the past 50 years and account for 70 per cent of all deaths related to natural disasters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/waterresourcesmanagement\">World Bank, 2022<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Transboundary waters account for 60 per cent of the world\u2019s freshwater flows, and 153 countries have territory within at least 1 of the 310 transboundary river and lake basins and inventoried 468 transboundary aquifer systems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwater.org\/publications\/sdg-6-synthesis-report-2023\">UN-Water, 2023<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Only 24 countries report that all their transboundary basins are covered by cooperation arrangements.
