{"id":86673,"date":"2024-09-16T12:09:46","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T16:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/?p=86673"},"modified":"2024-09-16T12:25:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T16:25:49","slug":"earth-had-its-hottest-august-in-175-year-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carilec.org\/earth-had-its-hottest-august-in-175-year-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth had its hottest August in 175-year record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer 2024 was Northern Hemisphere\u2019s warmest on record.<\/p>\n<p>August 2024 was Earth\u2019s hottest August in NOAA\u2019s 175-year climate record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sweltering month was also the 15th month in a row of record-warm months and wrapped up the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s warmest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/meteorological-versus-astronomical-seasons\">meteorological summer<\/a>\u00a0on record, according to scientists and data from NOAA\u2019s National Centers for Environmental Information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are highlights from NOAA\u2019s latest monthly global climate report:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Climate by the numbers<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">August 2024<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The average global land and ocean surface temperature in August was 2.29 degrees F (1.27 degrees C) above the 20th-century average of 60.1 degrees F (15.6 degrees C), ranking as the warmest August in the global climate record.\u00a0This August marks the 15th-consecutive month of record-high global temperatures \u2014 which is itself a record streak.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Europe and Oceania had their warmest August on record, Asia saw its second-warmest while Africa and North America each had their third-warmest August.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Season (June\u2013August 2024) | Year to date (YTD, January\u2013August 2024)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">June\u2013August 2024 was the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s hottest meteorological summer on record, at 2.74 degrees F (1.52 degrees C) above average. Arctic sea ice extent was below average, ranking fourth-lowest on record; while Antarctic extent was also below average, ranking second-lowest on record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tropics saw an average August:\u00a0<\/strong>Fifteen named storms spun across the globe in August, which was near the 1991\u20132020 average. The Atlantic basin saw two tropical cyclones during August: Debby, a Category 1 hurricane that made landfall in Florida, and Ernesto, a Category 2 hurricane that made landfall in Bermuda.
