The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) invites suitably qualified candidates to apply to fill the post of   In House Counsel. The successful applicant will report to the General Manager of the company and will be hired on contract for two (2) years in the first instance.

Applicant’s Minimum Requirement

  • Called to the Bar of St. Kitts and Nevis
  • At least three (3) years’ post qualification experience, litigation experience is an asset
  • A great communicator, able to communicate clearly and convincingly
  • Strong research skills along with proven ability of experience in statutory interpretation
  • Able to work independently, think critically and prioritise tasks
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with Management and Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:

  1. Draft and/or review internal and external agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure that the company’s best interest and full legal rights are served.
  2. Provide accurate and timely counsel to management on a variety of internal and external legal matters (labour law, interpretation of the Electricity Act, torts, corporate finance etc.)
  3. Assist in debt collection matters such as preparing demand letters to customers and filing civil matters in the Magistrates’ and High Courts.
  4. Represent SKELEC in court on simple matters and work along with her external counsel that may be engaged by the company.
  5. Participate in proposal/agreement negotiations on behalf of the company and liaise with relevant stakeholders on same.
  6. Assist with the drafting, revision and implementation of internal governance policies and regularly promote and monitor legal, compliance and risk management best practices throughout the company.
  7. Maintain current knowledge of the Electricity Act of St. Kitts as well as be familiar with the energy and electricity legislations of other CARILEC member jurisdiction.

Salary: To be negotiated
