About Cayman

The Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory, encompasses 3 islands in the western Caribbean Sea. Grand Cayman, the largest island, is known for its beach resorts and varied scuba diving and snorkeling sites. Cayman Brac is a popular launch point for deep-sea fishing excursions. Little Cayman, the smallest island, is home to diverse wildlife, from endangered iguanas to seabirds such as red-footed boobies.

Language

The official language of the Cayman Islands is English (90%). Islanders’ accents retain elements passed down from English, Scottish, and Welsh settlers (among others) in a language variety known as Cayman Creole. Caymanians of Jamaican origin speak in their own vernacular (see Jamaican Creole and Jamaican English). It is quite common to hear residents converse in Spanish as many citizens have relocated from Latin America to work and live on Grand Cayman. The Latin American nations with the greatest representation are Honduras, Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Spanish speakers comprise approximately between 10 and 12% of the population and are predominantly of the Caribbean dialect. Tagalog is spoken by about 8% of inhabitants, most of whom are Filipino residents on work permits.

Climate

The climate of the Cayman Islands is tropical, hot and humid all year round, with a dry, relatively cool season from late November to mid-April, when the northeast trade winds blow, and a rainy, muggy season from late April to early November.
In winter, temperatures in the Caymans are lower than in summer, but they are still high enough for swimming and sun bathing. However, from December to March, the islands can sometimes be affected by a cool wind from the United States, which can lower the night temperature to around 15 °C (59 °F).
During the rainy season, the maximum temperature is around 32 degrees Celsius (90 °F), and moisture makes the heat sweltering, although sea breezes give some relief.

Currency

The official currency of The Cayman Islands Dollar is the currency of the Cayman Islands. It is abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively CI$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents. The Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD) is pegged to the United States Dollar (USD). $1 USD = $0.83 KYD. If the USD inflates, then the KYD also inflates at the same rate since the KYD is pegged to the USD.

Electricity

Grand Cayman runs on a 120-volt electricity system with three-pin plugs. However, outlets can accommodate a two-pin American plug
