About Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls and the El Yunque tropical rainforest. In San Juan, the capital and largest city, the Isla Verde area is known for its hotel strip, beach bars and casinos. Its Old San Juan neighborhood features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive, centuries-old fortresses.

Language

The official languages of the island are Spanish and English, although Spanish is the most widely spoken by residents.

Climate

The climate in Puerto Rico is warm and tropical (i.e., expect an afternoon shower during the summer months). The temperature varies between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. It can go down to about 60 degrees in the central mountains area during December and January.

Currency

The official currency is the U.S. dollar, referred to as “peso” or “dolar” by locals.

Electricity

The standard voltage in Puerto Rico (120 V) matches the voltage level your devices typically operate at in the United States. You don’t need a voltage converter in Puerto Rico. To be sure, check the label on your devices. Some devices never need a converter. If the label states ‘INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz’ the device can be used in every country in the world. This is common for devices with chargers like tablets/laptops, photo cameras, cell phones, toothbrushes, etc. For these devices you will only need a power plug adapter.
