About St. Maarten

St Maarten is guarded by a chain of lush green hills with peaks that display breathtaking views of the valleys, sea and neighbouring islands. St. Maarten is a culturally diverse nation, famously known for being shared by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and France. The union is upheld by the Treaty of Concordia signed in 1648. The Friendly Island, as it’s affectionately referred to, was a rural destination before its urbanization. Scenes of the past are seen in the multiple historical sights, buildings, and rich traditions of people today.

Language

Sint Maarten is the Dutch portion of the island of Saint Martin, whose official languages are Dutch and English. In Sint Maarten, two-thirds of the populations speaks English, one-tenth speak Spanish, and another one-tenth speaks a Creole language. French, Dutch, and Papiamento languages are each spoken by approximately 5% of the population.

Climate

The warm Caribbean breeze and sunny skies is a treasure that St. Maarten gets to experience 365 days of the year. St. Maarten has a tropical climate, which is usually hot and humid, with temperatures that are cooled down by trade winds. The average temperature on the Friendly Island of St. Maarten is 80 °F (27 °C). From December to April you can expect a temperate climate, rarely exceeding 90°F (32°C), and never dipping below 68°F (20°C), with a lower humidity and cooling trade winds blowing in from the northeast. It’s ideal beach weather, with the occasional cloudy day, with some rain showers, which are relatively brief.

Currency

The official currency of Saint Martin is the euro, while Sint Maarten uses the Netherlands Antillean guilder, pegged at 1.79 per US dollar. As a consequence of the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands Antillean guilder will cease to be legal tender and be replaced by the Caribbean guilder, which was scheduled for circulation in the first half of 2021, but now scheduled for 2024. Almost every store on the island also accepts the United States dollar, although sometimes a more expensive exchange rate is used.

Electricity

Electricity in St. Maarten (Dutch side) is exactly the same as the United States with a 110 voltage at 50 Hz standard. Standard US plugs and appliances are compatible too. On the other side, St Martin (French side) has a 220 voltage at 60 Hz.
