About Grenada
Grenada, known as the ‘Isle of Spice,’ is one of the most magnificent islands in the West Indies. Unspoilt and exotic, it astounds visitors with its wildly jagged mountain peaks, hidden coves, spice plantations, and lush verdant rainforests. Its beaches are idyllic, with white or golden sand, palm trees, and the delicate aroma of the island’s native spices.
In addition to its scenery, Grenada offers culture, fun, and friendliness typical of the authentic Caribbean life – making Grenada the perfect place in which to live, work and play.
Language
English is the country’s official language but the main spoken language is either of two creole languages: Grenadian Creole English and, less frequently, Grenadian Creole French or ‘patois’ which reflects the African, European, and native heritage of the nation.
Climate
The climate of Grenada is tropical, hot and humid all year round, with a relatively cool season from December to March and a hot, sultry and rainy season from June to November.
The trade winds blow all year round, reducing the sensation of heat, usually from the north-east, although in the hot period they can blow from the east or the south-east.
Currency
The currency of Grenada is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$ or XCD), which is pegged to the US dollar. Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$2 and EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
US dollars are widely accepted on the island, though you will usually be given change in EC dollars, and at a less favorable exchange rate. Credit cards are widely accepted, and if taking travelers’ checks we recommend taking them in US dollars.
Electricity
Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) is the sole provider of electrical energy to the islands of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Voltages used on the islands are 220 volts (single phase, 50Hz cycles) and 110 volts (3 phase 50Hz cycles). In Grenada, power plugs and sockets (outlets) of type G are used.
Travel Documents
If you are visiting our islands, you must have a valid passport and return or onward ticket. Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months from your arrival into the country. Please remember however, that as mandated by the United States Department of Homeland Security, all US travellers must provide a passport to enter or reenter the US for both vacation and business travel.
A visa is not required for citizens of the US, Canada, UK, British Commonwealth, South Korea, Japan and most Caribbean and European countries. It may be best to familiarize yourself with the complete list of travellers requiring visas and those exempt from visas.
Time Zone
Atlantic Standard Time (AST) is used throughout the year, which is 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (-4 GMT). Daylight Saving Time is not observed.
