About Jamaica

Jamaica is the third largest of the Caribbean islands and the largest of the English speaking islands. It is a very mountainous country with almost half of the island is above 1,000 feet (305m). Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point, is 7,402 feet (2,256m) above sea level. The hottest months are in the summer and the winter months (December to March) are appreciably cooler. Areas of high altitude are also much cooler. Jamaica is blessed with several mineral springs, four of which are developed with facilities for bathing and/or accommodation. One is attached to the Grand Lido San Souci Hotel and three are Public; Bath in St. Thomas, Milk River in Clarendon and Rockfort in St. Andrew.

Language

English is the country’s official language but Jamaican Patois (or Patwa) is also spoken – a colorful, descriptive and emphatic creole dialect that has been shaped by African, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English colonial heritage.

Climate

Jamaica has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, moderated by sea breezes and influenced by trade winds. The weather features distinct dry and wet seasons, with heavy but brief showers common during the wet months of May, June, October, and November. Temperatures are consistent, ranging from the low 80s F (about 28°C) to high 80s F (about 31°C) on the coasts. The trade winds blow all year round, reducing the sensation of heat, usually from the north-east, although in the hot period they can blow from the east or the south-east.

Currency

The Jamaican dollar has been the currency of Jamaica since 1969. It is often abbreviated to J$, the J serving to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. US dollars are widely accepted on the island in most places, especially in tourist-heavy areas. However, not all places will accept them, and exchange rates vary. It’s always wise to carry some local currency for small vendors, taxis, and rural areas. Credit cards are widely accepted, and if taking travelers’ checks we recommend taking them in US dollars.  ATMs offer some of the best conversion rates. They’re easily accessible in major cities, airports, and even some resorts. Use a debit card with international access and withdraw in Jamaican Dollars (JMD). Current exchange rate US$1 =J$159.97.

Electricity

Electricity in Jamaica uses Type A and B outlets with a 110 Volt supply and 50 Hz frequency, requiring adapters for devices not compatible with this system. The primary supplier is JPS (Jamaica Public Service Company), which generates power from thermal and renewable sources like oil, gas, wind, hydro, and solar energy.

Travel Documents

To travel to Jamaica, you must have a valid passport and return or onward ticket. Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months from your arrival into the country.  For more information prior to travelling to Jamaica visit https://jamiacaform.org/jamaica-travel-guide/

Time Zone

Jamaica follows Eastern Standard Time all year and is on the same time schedule as the East Coast of the United States except during the period of daylight-saving time. Then, Jamaica is one hour behind the eastern United States. The time never changes, they do not honor any time changes.
