Grid Operations and Management (Introductory)

This comprehensive course is designed by CARILEC and the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to introduce participants to the fundamentals of grid operations and management while providing real-world insights into the evolving energy sector. Delivered through a mix of lectures, interactive sessions, site visits, and hands-on training, the program equips participants with essential technical knowledge and practical skills.

The training program spans 17 days and is delivered in three parts:

  • Part 1: 3 days – USD $2,100 per person
  • Part 2: 5 days – USD $3,500 per person
  • Part 3: 10 days

Day 1

  • Safety Overview

  • GIS Overview
    • Understand the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in energy management.
    • Explore applications of GIS for efficient grid planning and operations.

 

Day 2

  • Tour of Thermal Power Plant
    • Gain insight into the operational processes of a thermal power plant.
    • Understand how thermal power contributes to the overall energy mix.

 

Day 3

  • ICT (Cyber Security & Digital Network Applications)
    • Identify critical threats to grid cybersecurity and corresponding preventive measures.
    • Explore digital network applications for enhanced grid operations and monitoring.
  • Grid Management Overview Presentation
    • Understand the foundational principles of effective grid management.
    • Identify key tools and technologies used in modern grid management.
  • Control Centre Tour
    • Observe the day-to-day operations within a control center.
    • Explore real-time monitoring and decision-making processes for grid stability.

 

Day 4

  • Grid Management Systems
    • Explain the role of grid management systems in maintaining reliability and efficiency.
    • Analyze case studies of successful grid management implementations.
  • IRP Process & IPP PPA Technical Management
    • Understand the Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) process and its strategic importance.
    • Explore Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements and their technical management.

 

Day 5

  • Engineering Projects, Interconnection, T&D Grid Planning
    • Identify best practices for Transmission and Distribution (T&D) grid planning.
    • Analyze interconnection challenges and solutions for diverse energy sources.

 

Day 6

  • Operations Planning
    • Understand the fundamentals of operational planning in power systems.
    • Develop strategies for handling variations in demand and supply effectively.

 

Day 7-8

  • Control Centre & Grid Management System Training (Multiple Sessions)
    • Gain hands-on experience with tools and technologies used in grid management.
