JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Generation Manager is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective production of electricity to meet organizational demand. The role ensures that generation capacity, plant performance, and operational readiness align with Grenlec’s strategic and operational objectives, while maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The incumbent plays a critical in supporting Grenlec’s generation expansion, energy transition initiatives (including renewable energy and battery storage), and grid stability, while driving operational efficiency and cost containment.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Lead and manage all electricity generation activities to ensure consistent, reliable, and efficient power supply.
- Optimize plant performance, availability, and output while minimizing downtime and operational costs.
- Ensure all generation operations comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
- Develop and implement annual budgets, operational plans, and maintenance schedules for the Generation Department.
- Ensure timely procurement and availability of fuel, spare parts, equipment, and other critical resources.
- Prepare technical specifications for plant equipment, upgrades, and capital projects.
- Drive cost efficiency, including fuel management and operational cost optimization.
- Oversee generation expansion projects, including thermal, renewable energy, and BESS integration.
- Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs to ensure maximum equipment reliability and lifespan.
- Monitor plant performance metrics and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex mechanical and electrical issues.
- Plan and execute generation-related projects aimed at improving efficiency, capacity, and reliability.
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies and best practices in power generation.
- Provide strong leadership, direction, and oversight to Generation Department staff.
- Build a high-performance culture through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Identify training and development needs in collaboration with HR and ensure workforce capability.
- Collaborate with Procurement, Stores, Finance, and other departments to support operational effectiveness.
- Manage relationships with external suppliers, contractors, and service providers.
- In conjunction with the Manager – Carriacou and Petite Martinique prepares and implements maintenance plans for the effective operation of all equipment in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
- Performs other related duties assigned by the Chief Engineer from time to time.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- At least 3 years in a senior management role.
- Extensive experience in the utilities or power generation sector.
Experience with renewable energy systems or energy transition projects will be an asset.
