CARILEC is pleased to announce the return of its Chief Executive Officers’ (CEOs’) and Leadership Conference for the second year in a row, since its two (2) year hiatus, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s CEOs’ and Leadership Conference will be held under the theme, ‘360-degree Leadership: Balancing the Load’. CARILEC has chosen this theme, recognizing that leaders within the energy industry need to adopt this leadership style now, more than ever. 360-degree leadership is an essential strategy for leaders if they are to successfully navigate the ever-changing and versatile energy sector, particularly with the shift to sustainable and renewable energy sources.
The theme refers to the need for inclusive leadership, creating a holistic vision and shared responsibility for power sector modernization and energy transitioning. It does not only refer to internal leading (e.g., of employees and self), but also externally by building ownership of customers/prosumers, government policy makers, regulators, IPPs and other business partners (360).
Moreover, this type of leadership involves identifying oneself as a leader who simultaneously influences people at every level of the organisation. This influence can be described as the fuel which employees require to cultivate innovation, creativity, and collaboration. In addition, becoming a 360-degree leader also requires a high level of selflessness. Great leaders are often willing to expense their own personal interest and acknowledgement; propelled foremost by their desire to best fulfil the organisation’s mandate. An effective tactic to demonstrate selflessness is to genuinely acknowledge contributions from team members, often and publicly.
Another trait which is an integral component to 360-degree leadership is recognizing, without prejudice, that employees may be more talented and experienced than their leaders. This realisation helps the leader to trust team members to perform, which empowers individuals to provide their best contribution. Consequentially, a conducive working environment is fostered which allows team members to come forward with ideas and suggestions, including oppositional views to those of the leader, which may benefit the organisation.
While expanding on the above-mentioned fundamental principles of 360-degree leadership, this conference will address topics related to the role of leadership in building resourceful relationships and fostering collective ownership that reflects balanced and sustained efforts of all stakeholders in the energy transitioning process. More specifically, conference topics will include creating ownership for energy transition; building the right culture for remote teams; empathetic leadership: fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; cultivating excellent leadership and coaching techniques and collaborating for energy sector planning. These topics will be presented with a heavy focus on best practices, lessons learnt, and successful models for replication in the region.
