Land Transportation

The Basseterre Ferry Terminal facilitates travel between Saint Kitts and sister island Nevis.

Renting a vehicle is also an option to get around the island. It is necessary to obtain a driver’s permit before you are allowed to drive in St. Kitts, even if you have an international driver’s license. The permit costs $62.50 XCD (US $24). It can be obtained from the Traffic Department, or facilitated through the rental agency. Remember that in St. Kitts, you drive on the left-hand side of the road. While driving around the island, kindly adhere to the speed limits, local traffic laws, and remember never to drink and drive. Seatbelt use is mandatory. Ask your car rental agency about including a child seat, should you require one. When making your reservation, ask about the convenient airport pick-up option.
